Abstract

Digital environment changes consumers’ behaviour, access to the information, knowledge, therefor cultural libraries should “become the coordinators of informational literacy and community media” (Bibliotekų plėtros strateginės kryptys 2016–2022 metams, 2016).

School library is a chain of a wider libraries and information network, however, as a part of a school community, it has to attribute to the successful growth of students, teachers and wider society. Today the attitude to the teaching is changing along with a transition towards personalized training and education. Virtual cognition and electronic resources overtake the obsolete methods of teaching. The school today should include library as a major source of information in the shifting educational process in which personalized, remote, network-like training is based on the informational technologies (Geros mokyklos koncepcija, 2015). In order for a school to become an integral part of educational process, there must exist a modern physical and virtual environment that has a favorable area for learning, the competent librarians that are capable of delivering electronic services to the customers.

The aim of the article is to analyse the provision of electronic services in Panevėžys city schools’ libraries.

The research in which participated 19 Panevėžys schools‘ libraries was conducted by the order of Gabrielės Petkevičaitės-Bitės public library in the beginning of 2018. The questionnaire was set up with the consultation of public schools‘ libraries’ specialists. In the questionnaires schools’ librarians got the questions on the libraries capacity to provide electronic services, their popularization in order to find out if librarians are ready to satisfy the growing needs of electronic service users and what are such service development possibilities.

Conclusions:

Most of Panevėžys city school libraries have capacity and offer the customers electronic services. In libraries‘ reading rooms there are installed computerized work areas with wireless Wi-Fi internet access. Most of libraries display own rubrics in the school internet page, use “School library internet systems” and textbook programs, have electronic catalogues. According to the employee survey data, the users of electronic services sometimes face the problems due to the outdated electronic technique in the school library, interrupted internet connection or too short work time of the institution.

Panevėžys city schools’ libraries plan to further develop the provision of electronic services. According to the opinion of personnel, it would be useful to ensure the electronic catalogue accessibility on the internet and its adaptation for the mobile devices in order to provide readers with an easy and fast access to the system as well as create orders, reservations and search for the publications. However, the librarians admitted that they lack the knowledge and competence on the electronic services and their functioning, need more instructions and consultations about the creation of media, visual exhibitions arrangement, want to be more accustomed to the work with social networks and use MOBID program‘s possibilities. Regular close cooperation between school libraries and Panevėžys municipality Gabrielės Petkevičaitės-Bitės public library would help to improve the electronic services quality and would open the way to the wider electronic services development perspectives.
